Understanding EMDR Therapy for Children and Adolescents
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It's a form of psychotherapy designed to help people recover from the distressing emotions linked to traumatic events. Unlike traditional therapies, EMDR focuses on the emotional and psychological effects of trauma, rather than talking through the event itself.”
How Does EMDR Work?
At its core, EMDR therapy involves eight phases, focusing on past memories, present disturbances, and future actions. One of its key elements is the use of bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, sounds, or taps. This process is believed to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories, reducing their emotional impact.
Why EMDR for Children and Adolescents?
Children and adolescents can be deeply affected by trauma, which can influence their development, behaviour, and academic performance. EMDR offers a less verbally intensive option, making it suitable for young people who might find it hard to express their feelings or talk about their experiences.
The Process of EMDR in Younger Clients
For children and adolescents, EMDR therapy is tailored to fit their age, developmental stage, and needs. Therapists may use creative and engaging methods like storytelling or play to help the child feel comfortable and safe. The goal is always to ensure the child understands what’s happening and feels in control.
The Benefits of EMDR
Research has shown EMDR can be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression in children and adolescents. It can help young people process their experiences without the need for detailed discussions of the traumatic event, which can be re-traumatising.
