Nettie draws on her 20 years experience of working with children. Her background is in the education sector where she worked as a Special Needs Assistant for fourteen years before pursuing her career as a therapist supporting children and young people who are struggling with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Nettie continues to work in school settings through School Completion Programme (SCP) and as a Resident Therapist. In her private practice she provides one to one support to children aged 7 to 18. Elements of her work also involves linking in with NEPS, TUSLA and Barnardos, as appropriate, to ensure continuity of therapeutic care for the young person in therapy.
Nettie has also trained as an EMDR therapist and is currently engaging in further studies to deliver EMDR to children and adolescents.
Her primary qualification is in Social Care which she studied with Carlow I.T before continuing with a H.Dip in Social Personal & Health Education (SPHE) with Waterford I.T. She then achieved a Masters Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences (ICHAS) and has since supplemented her existing qualifications with post graduate certifications in Child & Adolescent Counselling & Psychotherapy, CBT with children and Adolescents and Therapeutic Play Skills training.
Having set up a private practice in 2014 Nettie went on to expand the practice by opening her clinic - NorthStar Counselling & Therapy Centre, in 2020 where she is joined by a highly skilled team of professional counsellors and psychotherapists providing mental health support to all ages: children, adolescents and adults.
Nettie also delivers informational workshops for parents through Family Resource Centres and other agencies and is an educational facilitator on the Integrative Adolescent Psychotherapy Diploma Course with The Grenane Centre, Tipperary.
